Creature Features is one of two radio plays produced by The XV Theatre Company for the Bedford Park Festival. Creature Features imagines what would happen if a journalist went to interview the pets and wildlife of West London during lockdown. What are their lives like with the humans all at home? Is their habitat disturbed by the constant ‘exercising’? A play for all the family to listen to together, let’s find out what Gareth the overweight duck and Lula the over-excited Labradoodle have to say. Featuring: Lucy Briers, Phyllis Logan, Veronica Quilligan, Eric Carte, Adam Leese, Andrew Maud, Kevin McNally, John Rowe and Jeremy Vine. Written by Christina Balmer and Freya Alderson Sound design and editing by Matt Karmios, Apex Production Group SOUND DESIGNER/EDITOR
Dusted With Sugar is one of two radio plays produced by The XV Theatre Company for the Bedford Park Festival. "The play is set, fittingly, at a church fete. Phyllis Logan, the actor best known for her role as the housekeeper Mrs Hughes in Downton Abbey, plays a champion cake maker, embittered by being unexpectedly knocked off the top slot. Not for nothing was she crowned ‘Miss Leytonstone Light & Fluffy’ way back when, and she’s not happy. The play’s other character, the vicar, is played by Fr Kevin Morris, vicar of St Michael & All Angels Church, who in my opinion is wasted as an actual vicar. Listening to this you do wonder what goes on behind the scenes in the organisation of church fetes. He plays the part with such feeling!" FOH Sound Engineer for Broadway Legend Luba Mason LIGHTING DESIGNER | TECHNICAL DIRECTOR SNAG a review by VERNON THOMPSON
An evening of sparkling one-liners combined with great poignancy make this a must-see – it only runs til Saturday but The Tabard Theatre has been so delighted with the response to American playwright and director Tony Traxler’s play that they have invited him back next year for an extended run. To find this is his first full- length play is surprising, given how mature is the structure and character development, and how the action fizzes with fun and bristles with pathos alternately. Laurel unearths a bundle of diaries, which take her on a life-changing trip to a fertility clinic in New York. Lauren Powell in the main role is a very sympathetic and convincing presence while Richard Scott contributes a high quality performance as her lawyer. Iskander Najmudin as her dead gay father, gives a generous performance, remaining still for long periods to give the focus to other actors but seizing his moment well when in the limelight. A simple set and clever lighting design is used very effectively to suggest a multitude of different settings. Snag is transferring to New York and Los Angeles in 2020, and runs at the Tabard Theatre from 30 April-4 May. Performances take place Tuesday-Saturday at 7.30pm. |
